Better known as Carmel-by-the-Sea, the community of Carmel is dedicated to being a residential community where commercial enterprise is subordinate to residential character. It is "cottagey" and cozy and blessed with celebrity. The one-square mile town is made for walking and then wandering down the hill to the white-sand welcome on the bay, Carmel Beach, also known as “Town Beach.” Just south of town are the magnificent headlands of the Point Lobos State Preserve.
