Mobile beaches include those on both sides of Mobile Bay -- Dauphin Island on the west and Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach on the east. The island has a maritime forest as well as a sandy barrier with minimal vegetation.
Dauphin Island (pop. 1,300) is a 6.6-square-mile barrier beach south of Mobile by bridge. A car/pedestrian ferry serves Fort Morgan. It is the site of the Estuarium, a public aquarium, as well as several Audubon preserves and historic pre-Civil War Fort Gaines.
Beach access is typically by private cottage rental.
