San Luis Obispo Bay has a shoreline shaped like a fishhook and the point is Port San Luis. From this promontory, ruugged hills rise from water's edge and several piers project into the sharply curved bay. At Avila Beach, the sharp contours flatten out into a wide, sandy beach with its own pier. The compact setting is a dramatic seascape and it is just enough off the beaten path to never become crowded.
