South Padre Island is 5 1/2 miles of playground sandwiched between a park and 25 miles of undeveloped barrier island. The city of South Padre Island sits on the southern end of the 34-mile-long island and is as far south as Miami. The undeveloped miles north of town are an important migratory bird stopover. The birding is hot, but so is the fishing and that semi-tropical Texas sunshine. Beachfront accomodations offer the easiest access, but the north end of the island is open to all comers. There are more than a dozen beach access points off the east side of the island/Gulf Blvd.
