There may not be a more laid-back location to lie in the sun than the Tybee Island beaches. There are 5 miles of wide beach that curl around this island village; some of it on the gently lapping shore of the Savannah River; most of it is east-facing on the Atlantic Ocean.

Tybee Island is dotted with interest: a towering lighthouse, an old fort, dolphins in the river and sea turtles nesting on the beach. Mainly, it’s very easy-going.

Beach access is by accommodation, but there is public parking and ample public access to the beach.

Tybee Island may be Savannah’s stepsister and Hilton Head’s poor cousin, but this Georgia barrier island has a retro charm. For families, its affordability is a primary appeal. This Atlantic beach destination is one of those rare places where visitors won’t feel overcharged for every burger and beach towel.
