While Wilmington is 17 miles from the closest beach, visitors have 27 miles of recreational oceanfront a short drive away. There’s a beach for every taste, from exclusive Figure Eight Island and historic suburban Wrightsville Beach to pulsing Carolina Beach and sleepy Kure Beach. Nature lovers will boat to undeveloped Masonboro Island or roam the miles of wild, free and accessible oceanfront of Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. Beach access is typically through accommodations. Wrightsville Beach has an inhospitable parking policy so pick Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area for daily visitation. Best time to visit: early in-season.
