Seventeen-mile-long Cumberland Island is one of the world’s biggest undeveloped barrier islands with one of the country’s largest maritime forests. This is a place lost in time and in no hurry to be found. Once owned by the Carnegie steel family, the island is accessible only by boat or ferry from St. Marys, Ga. The National Park Service limits access to 300 visitors each day.
