One thing immediately sets Fire Island apart from other beach areas: no cars allowed. Visitors take a 30-minute ferry trip from Long Island to Fire Island. Vacation starts when you climb up to the boat’s open-air top deck. Seventeen different communities make up the 30-mile-long barrier island -- from the family-oriented Fair Harbor to the island’s unofficial “capital” of Ocean Beach to the primarily gay communities of Cherry Grove and The Pines.
